Program - E.A.G.L.E.S. SPIRIT
Aboriginal Domestic Violence in Canada, a study done
in 2003 for the
Aboriginal Healing Foundation, states: “Family violence and abuse is
like a aggressive cancer. It is progressive (it gets worse and worse
over time); it is deadly unless stopped and is very difficult to achieve
a cure. Like cancer, domestic abuse tends to metastasize to other
parts of the family system unless it is detected early and aggressively
cut or otherwise treated.”
This program is being offered in collaboration with Vancouver
Native
Health Society. The Family Violence Centre will offer intervention and
prevention counselling and workshops to Aboriginal families who have
experienced the trauma of family violence. A special emphasis is placed
on children’s needs in early childhood development.
The program is comprised of 6 workshops that deal with specific
but
related aspects of family violence. The program uses a holistic approach
to wellness and education that ensures that clients receive the best
practices of both Aboriginal and mainstream services, support and
assistance.
